Integrated monitoring system of spatial data to improve air quality in Krakow
Air quality is currently at the forefront of the issues related to urban space, which are important for the residents of Kraków. Therefore, city authorities make efforts aimed at fighting with low emissions. Among many different activities, a special attention should be drawn to the implementation of the project: “Integrated monitoring system of spatial data to improve air quality in Kraków”. This complicated name comprises a number of future-oriented projects aimed not only at solving the problem of aerosanitary conditions ad hoc. In short, Kraków needs to be ventilated, because its unfavorable geographical position makes the air circulation in the city difficult. Therefore, how to increase the amount of fresh air in the city, at the same time reducing the disadvantages of living there? The implementation of the project comprises primarily a strategy calculated for many years, which will allow for such spatial planning, which will result in a better air exchange and regeneration in Kraków.
Another result of the project will be to provide a modern database of spatial information, obtained from the monitoring, control and measurements performed with the use of modern technology, in order to support the decision-making process, aimed at improving the quality of residents’ life, according to the idea of sustainable development.
Even if the residents of Kraków are not direct beneficiaries of the project, they will be the most affected by measurable effects of its implementation and will benefit most from its implementation. Employees of Kraków administration will gain excellent tools for spatial planning. Indirect beneficiaries will also include other public authorities, as well as research centers.
The project “Integrated monitoring system of spatial data to improve air quality in Kraków” is co-financed from the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2009-2014. The value of the project is 3,685,671 Polish zloty, while the subsistence represents 85% of this value, i.e. 3,132,820 Polish zloty. The project will be run in the years 2014-2016 by the Municipality of Kraków in partnership with the Monitoring and Modeling of Air Pollution Department at the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute. The participation in the project of an institution with such high scientific achievements in the study of atmospheric phenomena and spreading of pollution ensures a proper conduct of its implementation.
The action “Assessment of the conditions of ventilation in Kraków using an advanced modeling system” will consist of two major components: the purchase of measurement instruments and the preparation of studies and analyses. The significant element of this action is that the analyses will be performed using advanced modeling based on climate models.czytaj więcej
